Green Century believes in equal and free access to pure, clean, fresh water. As fresh water becomes increasingly polluted and scarce, we are working to ensure that our water sources remain clean, uncontaminated, and conserved for future generations. Green Century is also pressing for equal access to fresh water for all people.
2009-2010 Issues:
- Hydraulic Fracturing - Hydraulic fracturing is a process used to extract natural gas from tight rock formations and other unconventional natural gas sources. Under high pressure, a mixture of water, chemicals, and sand is injected into the ground to create fractures through which gas can then flow to be collected. We are working to increase disclosure, reduce the chemical threat posed by this process, and protect drinking water.

- Water Consumption by Electric Power Plants - Electric utilities require access to huge quantities of water; about 40% of the fresh water withdrawals in the US are attributable to the generation of thermoelectric power. We are encouraging electric utilities to measure their water footprint and reduce their water withdrawals by generating power through less water intensive technologies such as wind.
