Toxics and Environmental Health
Green Century's toxics and environmental health program encourages companies to minimize the use of chemicals which have known or suspected negative health impacts, and instead substitute safer alternative chemicals or non-chemical processes. By doing so, companies can reduce liabilities and improve customer satisfaction while protecting the environment. Our toxics and environmental health program also investigates and takes action on pollution in the environment, often related to chemical security and waste reduction.
2009-2010 Issues:
- Bisphenol A in Product Packaging - Green Century continues to encourage companies to recognize and address the risks posed by bisphenol A (BPA), an estrogen-mimicking chemical that has been linked to numerous health problems and is used in hard plastics and can linings. Green Century is engaging with companies throughout the BPA supply chain, including packaged food and beverage companies, chemical companies, and retailers, encouraging all parties to identify safer alternative packaging materials and phase out BPA.
- Chemical Security - Security at chemical facilities has become one of the most important issues facing our country. Across the United States, thousands of facilities use and store extremely hazardous substances in large quantities that pose major risks to surrounding communities, employees, and the environment. We are working to encourage companies to switch to chemicals that are less acutely hazardous, reduce the quantities of extremely hazardous substances stored at facilities, alter the processes used at facilities, and/or locate facilities outside densely populated areas.
